We live in a world that is rapidly evolving and changing. As humankind continues to expand into areas that were previously considered nature’s domain, we have seen a remarkable decline in what can be called pristine habitats. Despite this, nature continues to find ways to push back, to establish itself, and regain enduring footholds, even within urban environments. The necessity of finding a middle-ground between ourselves and natural areas, has become more urgent in light of: (1) the severe loss of habitats that has profoundly impacted wildlife and the ecosystems upon which we rely upon; (2) the actual stability and integrity of our planet’s climate are exceedingly weaker than previous eras; (3) the rising incidence of zoonotic infections such as COVID-19, which jump from isolated animal populations to humans; and (4) the general significance of nature on instilling a sense of wellbeing to many within our population.

Synchronicity focuses on this balance between the natural and the synthetic man made environments. The work includes images of manufactured and human manipulated areas, as well as, protected habitats within state natural parks. I explored different locations within my hometown of La Canada Flintridge, California, and the surrounding areas of Pasadena, La Crescenta, Montrose, and Glendale. Exploring these areas allowed me to appreciate and show nature as a primal force that needs to be respected as its’ destruction produces perils for us all. Hopefully, the doctrines of integration and balance with nature moving forward, ring true throughout this work. As Synchornicity’s true focus was to create a safe space available to anyone who wishes to discuss environmental concerns and sustainability.
